He embraced me, turning me toward
him against his chest, and stroked my
hair. “I don’t know what it is about
you, Katie, but you are not like other
women.”
His heartbeat thudded against my
cheek. His hard muscles rippled
beneath me. I wanted to stroke his
bare chest, and, dammit, I did.
He lifted me up and cradled me
across his lap. I looked into his eyes,
and eternity stretched before me—my
past, present, and future reflected in
those striking depths. An electric
current sparked between us. I’d never
felt anything like it.
“I’d like to kiss you if that’s okay.”
His smoldering gaze tore down my
shield, and I slowly nodded,
mesmerized and mystified by both
my mounting desire and my uncanny
sense of familiarity toward him. Kane
grasped the back of my neck and
kissed me, this time deep and slow,
his tongue dancing with mine. It left
me breathless.
My body writhed with a will of its own,
betraying any doubts I had. Kane had
awakened something in me, a passion
that had been dead a long time. My
mind screamed “no,” but tonight, my
body controlled my emotions.
“Oh, Katie,” he murmured. “I…”
Something exploded. We both turned
toward the sound as sparks from a log
showered onto the stones in front of
the fireplace. Then, the bed started
shaking. I stared wide-eyed at Kane.
His look mirrored mine.
“Earthquake?” we blurted at the same
time.
That same eerie chill from earlier
slithered over my shoulders. My
breath and his came out in white
puffs. This was no earthquake.

Hecate’s Fury, is haunted by her past. Now, her present doesn’t make sense.
Savic, the scarred dragon shifter, insists she tried to kill him, but she didn’t. Or at

Twilight descended in a hush, like the silent flapping of an owl’s wings.
A hint of woodsmoke floated toward me, either from a fireplace or an
outdoor bonfire. Deeper shadows and shorter days, the fall colors of
orange, red, and gold, and that sense of lingering darkness all added to
the mystery and wonder of the coming winter. But it also called to
mind magic and danger, the darker elements of this time of the year.
I climbed into my SUV and drove home, gripping my steering wheel,
foreboding still clawing at me. The shadows around my apartment
building appeared deeper than usual, and I imagined all kinds of
horrors hiding there. My skin prickled as I walked up to the main
